A small but committed group of neighbors in the Wailua Homesteads area have decided to do something about the graffiti that keeps popping up all over their neighborhood park, tennis court and pavilion.
At their most recent Ka Leo O Kaua‘i meeting, held July 7 at Wailua Homesteads Park, members decided to paint the pavilion and restroom walls, pavilion floor, picnic tables, swings, slide and the tennis court wall.
This Saturday, July 24, the Wailua Homesteads group has scheduled a “Paint-The-Park” work party and pot luck lunch for neighbors and families at Wailua Homesteads Park. The work party is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., till 3 p.m.
Paint will be provided by the County of Kaua‘i. Workers should bring brushes, ladders, rollers, buckets and other equipment.
Mary Mulhall will provide art stencils for young painters and Mary Jane Burger will prepare some coffee. The group is asking everyone to bring some ono grinds to share. Everyone in the Wailua Homesteads area is welcome to help out, not just those who are attending meetings.
Participants at Wailua Homesteads Ka Leo O Kaua‘i meetings have built safety fences around keiki play equipment at Kamalani Bridge; nominated one of their members to be appointed to the Public Access, Open Space, Natural Resources Preservation Fund Commission; helped shorten the Olohena Bridge project schedule from 1› years to 7 months, and got tree branches trimmed that were hanging over several areas of road in Wailua.
Starting a Sunshine Market is another project of members. The market is held Tuesdays at 3 p.m. at the park.
Other current concerns of members: • Private tennis lessons given on the public courts three days a week, which prevents people from using the facilities.
• The need for an additional bus stop at the corner of Kamalu Road and Heimoi Place due to the distance from the current stop, the lack of sidewalks and increased traffic.
Wednesday, June 30, 7–9 p.m., Kapa‘a Middle School Cafeteria has been reserved for a community meeting for the Kalama Stream/Puuopae bridge project.
We will be reporting back to the community, answering their questions from the March 2004 meeting.
Wailua Homesteads meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month starting at 7 p.m. at the park. For more information about the KLOK program access www.kauai.hawaii.gov/kaleo or call the County’s Office of Economic Development at 241-6390.
