LIHU‘E — Two surfing towns came together for Friday night football with the San Clemente squad in total domination en route to a 31-7 win over Kaua‘i High School.
The Tritons were ready right out of the gates, as quarterback Brad Donnelly zipped two straight first down passes. Running back Nick Krempasky got the running game going with two first down scampers. Donnelly and Krempasky decided to hook up for 10-yard TD connection, to give the Tritons the early 7-0 lead in the first, with Dan Doyle’s PAT.
Kaua‘i failed to capitalize on good field position and weren’t able to get on the scoreboard after the first period.
In the second quarter, it was quarterback Mike Cook’s turn to get into the scoring mix, as good down field blocking enabled him to go the distance for an 80-yard TD run to put San Clemente up 14-0, with another Doyle PAT.
Kaua‘i finally erased the goose egg on the scoreboard with a 1-yard quarterback plunge from Red Raider QB Kekoa Crowell. Frank Speetjens nailed the PAT to cut the lead to 14-7 with seven minutes to go in the first half.
The game got into a frenzied pace as both teams traded interceptions towards the end of the half. Triton defensive back Nick Krempasky halted a Kaua‘i drive with a pick-off, but the Red Raiders answered with a snag of their own by Preston Ramson. San Clemente’s Eric Sawall got the final interception of the half, which led to a 24-yard field goal attempt by Doyle, who zipped it through the uprights for a 17-7 lead going into the second half. San Clemente’s Adrian Martinez also got things going on the defensive side with a key sack that stopped a late Kaua‘i drive.
It was all San Clemente in the third, as Krempasky continued to dominate the ground game with runs of 20 and 30, along with help from Chad Rusinkovich, who brought the San Clemente squad within striking distance.
A Donnelly to Matt Miller 12-yard pass enabled Krempasky to cross the goal line with a 4-yard TD run to give the Tritons a commanding, 24-7 advantage with five minutes to go in the third period. Doyle also added another PAT. Kaua‘i failed to score in the third, as San Clemente put the clamps on the Red Raider run-and-shoot scheme. The final score of the contest came at the beginning of the fourth quarter, as Tavaurus Abram found a hole in the left side of the Red Raider line and ran 40-yards for the TD score to give the Tritons a 31-7 lead, thanks to Doyle’s final PAT.
Both teams couldn’t find the endzone in the last 10 minutes of the game to make the final tally, San Clemente 31, Kaua‘i 7.
Meanwhile in the JV contest, the Tritons blanked the Red Raiders, 13-0.
San Clemente got all of its scoring in the first quarter, with a 40-yard TD run off of an interception and a 19-yard TD scamper from Derek Gerber. Tyler Hadzinsky added the extra point for the Tritons. After trading possessions in the third, both teams were unable to get on the scoreboard.
Kaua‘i failed to muster up any scores throughout the game, as they were oversized and overmatched by a much bigger San Clemente squad.
The Tritons almost scored with just under 30 seconds to go in the game, but they fumbled the ball inside the 2-yard line.
