Hard times for mascots Phevos and Athena
ATHENS, Greece — With the Olympics scheduled to start Aug. 13, they’re getting more bad press than the Olsen twins, and worse reviews than the latest Spike Lee flick. Olympic mascots Phevos and Athena, siblings named for a pair of Greek deities, are catching an ungodly amount of abuse around Athens.
The pair were derided in various news articles, described as animated condoms and mutants from a nuclear meltdown. Their names were co-opted by anti-Olympic activists, who promptly firebombed two government vehicles in February.
The winning creatures were created by a team of six. They were billed as two kids, brother and sister, “full of vitality and creativity, perhaps mischievous and hence lovable.”
Their bloodlines were impeccable, too.
Phevos was named for Apollo, the Greek god of light and music. Athena, the host city’s namesake, was the goddess of wisdom. Yet the result was less then heavenly.
Kamoku tops in Anahola Singles Tournament
Anahola’s Lopaka Kamoku topped a playoff for the top berth of the A Class at the Sanctioned Mini Singles tournament hosted by the Anahola Horseshoe Club on Saturday, Aug. 7.
Finishing with a 7-win, 2-loss record on a ringer average of 41.67 percent, Kamoku edged out Kimo Reis for the title of Tournament Champion in the playoff.
Hanalei’s Kriss Offenbacher finished with a 5-win, 3-loss record with a ringer average of 22.33 percent for second place.
Reis, finishing with a 5-win, 2-loss record and a ringer average of 22.16 percent, topped the B Class with Hanalei’s Kim Lindstedt finishing in second place with a 4-win, 2-loss record and a ringer average of 23.17 percent.
The tournament was sanctioned by the Hawai‘i State Horseshoe Pitchers and the National Horseshoe Pitching Association.

NSSA surf contest #1 scheduled for Aug. 21-22
The National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) announces that their Contest #1 of the new 2004-05 season will be held at P.K.’s in Po‘ipu starting at 8 a.m. on Aug. 21-22.
Hawai‘i’s best young amateur surfers will be gearing up to compete for points in the new season which will be a series of eight contests across the state.
Competitors gain points to qualify for the year end regional contest.
Those competitors who gain enough points following the State regional will receive an invitation to compete at California National Contest in June, 2005.
The NSSA is the most prestigious amateur surfing organization in the nation.
Well-known local professional surfers Andy and Bruce Irons, Rochelle Ballard, Kaipo Jaquai, and Kalani robb all worked their way through the ranks of the NSSA, winning national titles.
NSSA invites the public to enjoy a day in the sun and watch as Hawai‘i’s young and talented surfers battle in the points race.
Interested surfers may pick up entries at Progressive Expressions, Nukumoi Surf Co., and Hanalei Surf Co.
Entries for Contest #1 need to be submitted before Aug. 16.
Contest #2 is scheduled to be held on Maui Sept. 11-12.
