KAPA‘A — Ready or not, here comes the Kaua‘i High School varsity girls volleyball team, who climbed past Kapa‘a and stayed one game behind league front-runner, Waimea.
Kaua‘i defeated the Kapa‘a, 25-16, 23-25, 25-14.
Meanwhile, the Red Raider boys squad continued its dominance by taking out the Kapa‘a boys, 25-12, 25-20. Kaua‘i remains undefeated in the KIF with a 3-0 record and clinched the first round title.
On the girls side, the race is still tight with Waimea and Kaua‘i in a fist fight for the first round title.
Red Raider Kehau Judd led her team to the first set win, after slamming home kill after kill to give Kaua‘i a 15-8 lead.
But Kapa‘a stormed back, thanks to Jennifer Lindsey and Amniesty Ragsac, who both slapped balls to the floor to bring the Warriors closer to Kaua‘i at 15-13.
A big block from Jenna Gampon and Erin Fabro gave the Red Raiders a push to the finish, as Tina Moger’s dink ended the first set with Kaua‘i on top, 25-16.
Just as in all of the previous matches though, everyone at the Bernice Hundley Gymnasium knew that the Warriors would not go down without taking a set from the Red Raiders.
Kapa‘a didn’t let the home crowd down and fought Kaua‘i point for point. Lindsey, the jolly green giant, set off two bombs and a roof to give Kapa‘a the edge. The Judd/Moger combo brought the Kaua‘i contingent back with kills and aces to make the second set a nail biter. A Trisha Niau ace narrowed the lead to one at 23-24 in favor of the Warriors, but Niau got too greedy and served the next one to Po‘ipu and Kapa‘a got the second, 25-23.
The Red Raiders and head coach Rich Roberts were all business in the third set, as Judd, Jenna Akasaki, and Rosalyn Rapozo came up with the big plays to put Kaua‘i up 13-6, but Kapa‘a’s Ragsac and Joliann Arzadon didn’t let the lead get too large. After a Britney Carvalho roof, the Warriors moved closer at 16-10.
Kaua‘i put it into overdrive, as Judd and Fabro slammed home a kill a piece to give the Red Raiders a 10-point lead (20-10). Moger’s kill ended the match in favor of Kaua‘i, 25-14.
In JV action, Kaua‘i High School swept both the boys and girls matches. The Red Raider boys took three sets to beat Kapa‘a, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12.
The Red Raider girls only needed two sets to dismantle Kapa‘a, 25-12, 25-16.
The next volleyball match is on September 22, with Waimea traveling to Lihu‘e to face Kaua‘i. JV action starts it off at 3 p.m.
