LIHU‘E — Pop Warner football on Kaua‘i officially kicked off yesterday at Vidinha Stadium. With teams from all over the islands participating in a jamboree to start the 2004 season. League commissioner Leon Gonsalves Sr. welcomed the 2004 officers, along with parents, supporters, and players.
The 2004 Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League board members include, vice president, Sean Andrade, secretary Jane Garma, treasurer Susan Oshiro, and newly appointed league manager, Kirk Correa, along with cheer coordinator, Yvonne Hosaka.
Association presidents include, Nani Camat of the Northshore, Cindy Shigematsu of Kapa‘a, Mel Rapozo of Lihu‘e, Sean Andrade of Koloa, Clint Owen of Hanapepe, and Kurt Toma of Kekaha.
The league decided to dedicate this season and the jamboree to the men and women of the 299th that was recently deployed. The Kapa‘a players also wore their shiny new uniforms, which were provided by countless kind individuals. Kapa‘a also displayed signs of gratitude for the help they received. Scott Giarman of the Kaua‘i United Way was also presented a $2,000 check on behalf of the league. In addition, three Pop Warner Scholars were awarded at the event. Travis Aribon, who attends Kamehameha Schools, Lance Delos Reyes of Cheifess Kamakahelei Middle School, and Matthew Koyama, also of Chiefess KMS received the awards.
