LIHU‘E — After a scoreless first quarter, the Kapa‘a High School JV team slapped around Waimea High School in the last three quarters for a 21-0 win.
At the 7:30 mark in the second period, Kapa‘a forced a Waimea fumble deep in Menehune territory, but failed to punch it into the endzone.
But with 2:30 to go in the first half, a Coty Salausa interception gave the Warriors the ball back inside the Waimea 40-yard line. Kapa‘a quarterback, Chavis Kupihea connected on a 23 yard pass to Ronnie Alford to give the Warriors a first and goal attempt from Waimea’s seven yard line.
Then, Albert Aguila scampered through the left side of the line for a seven yard touchdown to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead. Salausa’s extra point made it 7-0 in favor of Kapa‘a. At the half, Kapa‘a remained on top with a touchdown lead. The third quarter mirrored the first quarter, as both teams’ defenses stiffened and were able to keep each other out of the endzone. With six minutes to go in the fourth, Salausa’s 23-yard reception from Kupihea allowed Aguila to cross the goal line once again. This time, the Warrior sophomore juked to the left for a five yard TD to give Kapa‘a a 13-0 advantage. Salausa’s second PAT of the night gave the Warriors the 14-0 lead.
Just three minutes after his second touchdown, Aguila struck again, but this time it was his longest run of the night.
Aguila swept to the right side and raced his way for a 39-yard TD run to give Kapa‘a a commanding 20-0 lead.
Salausa’s third extra point made it 21-0 in favor of the Warriors.
Kapa‘a’s Kahai Nakano intercepted a Waimea pass to stop Waimea’s last drive. Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i tangle next week Friday at Vidinha Stadium. JV game time is 5 p.m., with varsity action at 7:35 p.m.
