HANAPEPE — What do Colby Octavio, Aeson Pu‘u, Justin Ihara, Kevin Marugame, and now Justin Garma have in common? Well, they all manned the sidelines at Vidinha and Hanapepe Stadiums as ball boys.
Most of the time these individuals get overlooked, much like the chain gang posse, but without these people, the games could not go on.
Paul Pancho and his wife, Jane Garma, Lori Marugame, Tammy Ihara, and Becky Malapit, just to name a few, have played an important role in Pop Warner and KIF games throughout the years. Justin Garma has big shoes to fill, but he takes it one step at a time.
“My brother is on the other side and I’m on this side,” Garma said. The two brothers, who mirror each other’s antics have a lot of fun doing the job.
In full uniform, the Garma brothers take their job as ball boys seriously and it shows.
As they run from one sideline to the middle of the field to pick up the ball, they make sure that they are off the field by the time the next play starts. “I’ve been doing it for a little while,” Garma said.
With many years ahead of him, you can expect to see Garma on the field for a number of years.
Tammy Ihara, Lori Marugame, and Becky Malapit are also ball people, not to be confused with ball boys.
