It was a banner year for Kaua‘i High School junior Kehau Judd, who came into the year with a new last name (Silva last season) and a brand-new revamped volleyball game.
Judd was awarded the KIF’s top honor as 2004 player of the year for girls volleyball.
As the first round ended for the Red Raiders, it was evident that Judd had put her stamp on the award with precise hitting and great leadership. Judd is one of those players, who leads by example. Waimea High School put up a good fight in the first round, after beating the Warriors and Red Raiders in their first two games, thanks to KIF All-Star Middle Blocker Nue Wong (sophomore).
However, the Red Raiders ran into some trouble in the second round and found themselves in a dead heat with Kapa‘a High School. The Warriors were red hot in the second round with help from KIF All-Star Middle Blocker Brittney Carvalho (sophomore), KIF All-Star Setter Joliann Arzadon (sophomore), and KIF All-Star Outside Hitter Amniesty Ragsac.
The Red Raiders did manage to put it all together with another great leader, KIF All-Star Outside Hitter Tina Moger. Defense wins championships and without the help of KIF All-Star Defensive Specialist Jenna Akasaki (junior), Kaua‘i wouldn’t have been able to capture the KIF title.
As far as coaching goes, all three coaches could’ve won the award as the KIF coach of the year, but this year was a special one for Kapa‘a High School’s Kaipo Kealalio Jr. and his staff. Kaipo, a former Kapa‘a High School volleyball player, came into his first season as the head coach, with his father Kaipo Sr. up on O‘ahu dealing with an illness. With Kaipo Sr.’s passing happening right when the season began, it was quite special to see Kaipo Jr. out there and continuing to try his best, making his father proud.
