Richard W. Wildman
Richard W. Wildman of Anahola died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Dec. 10, 2004, at the age of 72.
Born in Seattle, Wash., on May 12, 1933, he was a specialist general manager with Boeing Military Airplanes Defense and worked on the project that developed the B-2 stealth bomber.
He is survived by Karen Valpoon, his caregiver and soulmate; son David (Penny) Kirk of Puyallup, Wash., daughter Debbie (Gary) Shupien of Auburn, Wash., seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; mother: Dorothy Jane Wildman of Lihu‘e; brother: Grant (Shirley) Wildman of Washington; two sisters: Marjorie McKay of Lihu‘e and Joyce Lande of Washington; the Valpoon ‘Ohana; Dr. Marie (John) Leekley of Wisconsin, Amil (Bev) Valpoon of Anahola, Debbie Coleman of Anahola; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, at Ko‘olau Hui‘ia Church in Anahola where services will be held from 11 a.m. to noon. Scattering of his ashes will be done at a later date.
Aloha attire is suggested and that friends bring a lei.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Corale R. Borges
Corale R. Borges of Wailua Houselots passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 14, 2004, at nearly 93 years of age.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Jan. 6, 1912, she was a kama‘aina resident of Kaua‘i, having moved here from California in 1955. She was in charge of admissions at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, and worked as the business manager for the Wailua Ranch Hotel before becoming a buyer for Kauai Stores, for which she worked until her retirement in 1977. For 15 years she helped run a family-owned shop, Waves of One Sea, at the Coconut Marketplace. As one of the first Bahá’ís on Kaua‘i, she helped to establish the Bahá’í Faith on the island, and served for many years as secretary of the Kawaihau Bahá’í Assembly. Over time she was a member of many civic organizations, including the Mokihana Club and Toastmasters International (then Toastmistress Club).
She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Morrison, now residing in Evanston, Ill.; son-in-law Gary Morrison of Hong Kong; three grandchildren, Kevin (Martha) Morrison of Houston, Jennifer (Charles) Chapa of London, England, and Randolph (Bonnie) Shaw of Chicago; and four great-grandsons.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary. The service is at 9:30 a.m., followed by burial at 11:30 a.m. at Lihue Cemetery.
A celebration of life gathering will also be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, from noon to 2 p.m. at Surf’s Island Seafood Grill, Harbor Mall, 3501 Rice St., Lihu‘e.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Kaua‘i Hospice, P.O. Box 3286, Lihu‘e, HI 96766, which provided loving assistance during Corale’s passage to the spiritual world.
Carlos Batalion
Carlos Agaran Batalion of Lihu‘e, died Dec. 14, 2004, at the age of 80.
Born Oct. 25, 1924, in Honokaa, Hawai‘i, he was a groundskeeper at Kauai Surf Hotel.
He is survived by his wife: Latina Batalion of Lihu‘e; son Bailon (Amalia) Batalion of Kaumakani; six daughters: Lolita (Philip ) Atia of Kapa‘a, Ludivina (Antonio) Capitle of Las Vegas, Cecilia (Jessie) Dela Cruz of Kalaheo, Ofelia (Rudy) Vigilia of Kalaheo, Marina (Danny) Ola of Lihu‘e, and Joy Batalion Lopez of Kapa‘a; 24 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; one brother: William (Caridad) Battulayan of Kapa‘a; many nieces and nephews.
Visitation is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 20, at the Kaua‘i Veterans Center in Lihu‘e from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Visitation is again scheduled on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kapaia from 8:30 a.m. Mass at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
Archie Hamilton
Archie R. “Bud” Hamilton, of Wailua Homesteads, also known as “Papa” to the families and children of Merry-Go-Round Preschool, died in San Clemente, Calif., on Dec. 10, 2004, at the age of 90.
Born in Los Angeles, Calif. on Nov. 21, 1914, he was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Betty V. Hamilton and his son Roland C. Hamilton. He was a business man and restaurant chef. He loved to travel and loved Mexico.
He is survived by four daughters: Gini (Steve) Martin of Wailua Homesteads, Carol (Richard) Borowski of Brea, Calif., Barbara Hamilton of Rancho Mirage, Calif., and Diane (Lee) McFarland of Redding, Calif.; 12 grandchildren including Karlee Martin of Wailua Homesteads; 15 great grandchildren; sister, Ida Warner of Yuma, Ariz.; two brothers: George (Ruthe) Hamilton of Gridley, Calif. and James (Shelley) Hamilton of Henderson, Nev.; one hanai daughter: Tina (Phillip) Sheets of Mission Viejo, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Those who would like to join in a celebration of his life can meet at Lydgate on Sunday, Dec. 19, at 3 p.m. Casual attire is requested. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society Kaua‘i Unit c/o The Crab Conquers, 4364 Hardy St, 2nd floor, Lihu‘e, HI 96766.
James ‘Turk’ Fukushima
James Takao “Turk” Fukushima of Kapa‘a, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Dec. 7, 2004 at the age of 74. Born in Kapahi, on Feb. 22, 1930, he was a sergeant in U.S. Army during the Korean War and a veteran with a Purple Heart and Bronze Medal. He was also known as “The Mayor of Kapaa Town”.
He is survived by three sisters, Grace A. Hikida, Nancy (Robert) Matsuda both of Honolulu, O‘ahu and Edna S. (Harvey) Kawasaki of Korea; seven brothers, Henry H. Fukushima, Edward T. Fukushima both of Honolulu, O‘ahu, Albert S. Fukushima of Kapa‘a; Paul S. Fukushima of Maryland, Joseph K. Fukushima of Maui, Raymond T. Fukushima and Richard S. Fukushima both of Kapa‘a; also survived by aunts, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery Pavilion; service officiated by Bishop Kimo Keawe will begin at 11 a.m. with burial to follow. Casual attire is suggested.
