Doug Waiamau and Gabby Manintin were recently named the top manager and employee of 2004, respectively, for the Sheraton Kauai Resort in Po‘ipu.
Denise Wardlow, director of operations at the South Kaua‘i resort, said Waiamau played a key role last year in “smoothly integrating to a new accounting and payroll system” while overseeing the daily operation of the accounting department.
Waiamau also worked with other operating departments at the resort to get a better grasp of their profit and loss statements, Wardlow said.
Waiamau is the assistant controller at the resort, and has held that position since he joined the resort in 1999, Wardlow said.
Waiamau, a certified public accountant, holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Also an employee at the resort since 1999, Manintin has played a key role in the maintenance of the resort, and in the resort’s preparation for storms last year, according to his supervisor, Mike Toth, director of engineering.
Manintin started as a maintenance person with the resort’s engineering department, and was promoted to a maintenance foreman position in November 2004.
Prior to Hurricane ‘Iniki in 1992, Manintin was a member of the Hawaiian duo, Chico & Gabby.
Before going to work at the resort full-time, he and partner Chico Edralin entertained regularly to crowds in the Drum Lounge, now known as the Point Bar.
Before joining the resort, Manintin held various positions with Grove Farm Land Corp., Rego Trucking, and Poipu Kai Resorts. Manintin is originally from Moloka‘i.
Waiamau and Manintin are among 320 full-time employees at the resort, which is owned and managed by the Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc.
The 413-room Sheraton Kauai Resort was voted as having the number-one beach in America by The Travel Channel in 2003 and 2004.
