After appearance in SAA/winning its first KIF title in four years, the Kapa‘a High School girls varsity soccer squad makes its the 2005 HH-Meadow Gold Dairies Girls Soccer State Championships, today against Pearl City at the Waip‘io Peninsula Soccer Park on O‘ahu at 3 p.m.
Kapa‘a is led by junior striker Rancee Wilson and defensive guru Amniesty Ragsac.
Kapa‘a has five freshmen on its roster, including goalie Maegan Pablo, Lauren Esaki, Tiana Kunioka, Stephanie Foster, and Lila Neuberger.
On the other side of the coin, the Warriors have six seniors, including Carrie Esaki (Lauren’s sister), Kauluwehi Oliver, Jemme Saronitman, Liana Kakalia, Joanne Kaona, and Leilani Josselin.
Other teams participating in the state tournament include A‘iea, Mililani, Moanalua, Kailua, Hilo, Kealakehe, Konawaena, Punahou, Baldwin, and King Kekaulike.
Punahou of the ILH is the top seed, with A‘iea of the OIA holding down the second spot. The MIL’s Baldwin is the third seed, and Hilo of the BIIF is the fourth seed. If the Warriors (5-1-2) can get past Pearl City (11-1-1), the OIA’s third-seed, they will move on to face top seeded Punahou on Thursday at 7 p.m. A loss would put Kapa‘a in the consolation bracket against the loser of the Mililani/King Kekaulike match at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
Punahou is the 2-time defending state champion. A KIF team has never won a state girls soccer title.
Old Friends
Former Kaua‘i native Michael Ban is the assistant athletic director for King Kekaulike High School. Ban was a successful basketball head coach for Kapa‘a High School back in the late 90s/early 2000s. The Na Ali‘i and the Warriors could meet up in this year’s state tournament.
TV coverage
Saturday’s third-place and championship games of the state girls soccer tournament will be televised live on OC-16, the producer of the program said yesterday. The third-place game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and the championship game at 8 p.m. on Saturday in the stadium at Waip‘io Peninsula Soccer Park in Waipahu.
