WAILUA — A smoldering fire that at one point threatened to jump into the heiau at Lydgate Park was quickly extinguished Tuesday morning by the Kaua‘i Fire Department Kapa‘a fire station crew.
Utilizing the station’s small pump truck to access the area near the heiau perimeter at the mouth of the Wailua River, the fire among a large amount of debris was doused as other fire fighters used shovels to turn the sand and debris to completely extinguish the blaze.
The call came in around 10:30 a.m. when park caretakers on a routine check of the area spotted the smoke from the unattended fire and called in the alarm.
Due to the gusty northerly winds, the fire could have erupted into a blaze which could have easily jumped into the heiau area, aided by the winds, firefighters said.
The cause of the blaze is unknown, but fire-fighters were quick to note the hazard the debris accumulation poses when beach-goers light a beach fire.
Debris is even more plentiful due to the runoff from the Wailua River during the recent rains.
