Automobile turn-signal lights
Don’t people know that this device exists in their vehicles? Where do these idiots get their driver’s license from?
On Monday, April 11, I was exiting Kukui Grove mall on the Macy’s side. Heading onto Kaumuali‘i Highway (between Kalepa Road and Nawiliwili Road) going towards town. Before proceeding onto the highway, I noticed a flatbed truck towing a small-size trailer heading into town. So, I pulled out onto the turning lane going to Nawiliwili Road (before attempting to go onto Kaumuali‘i Highway). All of a sudden, only inches away to my left, there was the truck that came speeding into my lane on the side of me. (Without indication he was going to switch lanes to turn into Nawiliwili Road). If it wasn’t for my Evoc training I received awhile back (it made me think of what I should do in last-minute situations), I quickly pulled to my right, and came to a stop without incident. (Luckily, I had a lot of shoulder and grass area to my right). There would have been a major accident and possible casualties in the area.
After 15 seconds, the lanes cleared. I proceeded to Kaumuali‘i Highway and had to stop at the lights of Nawilwili Road and Kaumuali‘i Highway. I looked to my right and noticed that the vehicle (the truck) had already passed the lights on Nawiliwili Road at Borders, and was well on its way to Nawiliwili.
This is to remind that idiot and all other idiots who don’t use their signal lights that people cannot read their minds on what action they are going to perform while driving. Also, areas as this (with double lanes) are not a free-way or raceway.
Let other drivers know what you plan to do ahead of time. (If your signal lights doesn’t worth, get them fixed, or use your basic hand signals).
Speeding near school
I feel compelled to write this before a true tragedy occurs.
The posted speed limit on Mailihuna Road in the Kapa‘a High School area is totally ignored, even when school lets out and children are present.
I live across the street from KHS, and observe daily, high, and I mean high, speeds passing the school, by mostly young drivers in hot-rod cars and pickups, and several dirt-bike riders at speeds of 50 to 60 MPH past the school when its in session or just letting out. It’s a formula for the tragic death of a child.
I realize the KPD can’t station a patrol car there permanently, so how about this: a couple of low-speed bumps at crossings? Problem solved and children safe.
A modest proposal
We have some problems on Kaua‘i. No surprise there. Kaua‘i’s a beautiful place to live and to visit. That’s why more and more people have been coming here, and why real-estate prices have been rising. It’s the basic law of supply and demand. But the demand for land and the resultant rising real-estate prices are causing the cost of rental and property acquisition to rise beyond the ability of residents to afford.
Creating affordable housing (supply side) seems to be such a perplexing problem that we are unable to meet the steadily increasing demand for it.
Increasing the incomes of residents with better-paying jobs isn’t happening either in our business-friendly climate. Who knew?
There just doesn’t seem to be a viable way to curtail the increasing numbers of people who wish to come here.
So what do we do?
The answer lies in attacking the root cause (demand) by making Kaua‘i less desirable.
We all have to focus on this problem, and pull together to accomplish this. We must do several things:
- Dirty up our island. Everyone must leave as much trash and litter and derelict cars and refrigerators on our beaches and roadways. Everyone with a dog must make sure they eliminate on the beach for people to step in. Generally, we must destroy the beauty that is attracting these people who are causing our problems.
- Ruin our ecology. It’s those darn green mountains, clear blue water and white sandy beaches that they all want. We could save a bundle on cesspool improvements. And who wants to pay for eradication of blackberry, Formosan koa, asparagus fern, iron wood…it just never ends! Let them grow. Let’s burn and kill all the unique native species that people want to see and experience. Importing invasive plants and animals will help immensely to kill off all that is unique and desirable on Kaua‘i. Forget that impractical and inefficient ferry system. We have plenty of planes and barges already to ship in brown tree snakes from Guam, coqui frogs from the Big Island, etc. In fact, I highly recommend killer bees!
- Promote crime. Abolish the police force. That will save some money. It will also allow criminals free reign to vandalize and murder tourists so they won’t come here. Of course, we’ll all have to invest in burglar alarms and weapons to defend ourselves, but isn’t that a small price to pay? Besides, making drugs more easily available will help us cope with the many challenges we face as we implement this necessary program. Hand-in-hand with this, we wouldn’t need to spend money on decent education since we wouldn’t need to be prepared for skilled jobs that with our business-friendly climate will never exist here anyway!
- Discard our aloha. Why are we being so nice to the very villains who are stealing our land from us? We must be rude and intolerant so they don’t get the idea we like them here.
- Destroy the Hawaiian culture. Yes, it’s sad, but the Hawaiian culture must go. It’s just too precious and unique to continue to exist. Besides, do we really want to be on display? It’s only attracting more people. We need to dump it now!
I recognize that this is just a starter list. We need to expand it and invest those now plentiful tax dollars in our future. But with all the state and county manpower we would free up with this proposal, we’d be able to lower our taxes and drop off the list as one of the most heavily taxed places in the country.
So why waste time and effort trying to figure ways to create jobs, improve education, build affordable housing, control crime and preserve our environment when we can simply go about attacking the root cause of all our problems and save money as well!
And those pesky vacation rentals and gated communities occupied by evil foreigners will go away by themselves. End of problem! Makes sense, yeah?
