Patrick is first woman to lead Indy 500
INDIANAPOLIS — The Andretti jinx is over at the Indianapolis 500. Danica’s era is just beginning.
Dan Wheldon won it — his fourth victory in five tries this year — ending 35 years of frustration and failure for the Andrettis at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as Danica Patrick’s electrifying run fell short with a nearly empty fuel tank.
“I’ve finally won the Indy 500!” Michael Andretti, Wheldon’s team owner, beamed in Victory Lane. “No more curse!”
The Andrettis had been plagued by bad luck at Indy since Michael’s father, Mario, won in 1969, and it appeared they might lose out again when Patrick surged to the lead with 28 laps to go after surviving a stalled engine and a crash that tore off her left front wing and nose cone.
Patrick became the first woman to lead at Indy, getting out front three separate times for a total of 19 laps. Still, the 23-year-old rookie shrugged off the notion that her showing was a victory for women in racing.
“I made a helluva point for anybody,” she said.

Heat 113, Pistons 104
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Instead of focusing on the Miami Heat, the Detroit Pistons devoted their attention to the referees. The champions weren’t happy, and they let their disgust defeat them.
On a night when Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal were better in the first half than they were in the final two quarters, the Heat didn’t need either of them to be the key factor in their 113-104 victory over Detroit on Sunday night.
Instead, Miami let the Pistons self-destruct.
Miami scored 11 points from the foul line during a 13-4 run that put the Heat ahead for good midway through the fourth quarter, and the Pistons lost control of their emotions to such a degree that Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey Billups were hit with technical fouls in the fourth quarter for screaming in disgust at the officials.
Pistons coach Larry Brown got in on the act, too, venting his displeasure with sarcastic shouts after he realized the game had slipped away from his team. Billups eventually fouled out, and Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess all finished with five fouls apiece.
Wade scored 21 of his 36 points in the first half, getting limited in the final 24 minutes by Lindsey Hunter’s defense and some foul trouble of his own.
O’Neal finished with 24 points for the Heat, and Eddie Jones had 19. Richard Hamilton led Detroit with 33.
