John Roberts’ record is a serious threat to some of our most cherished rights, such as equal voting rights, religious freedom, reproductive rights, rights to privacy, and worker protections. Roberts’ refusal to answer more than 100 questions from the Senate during his hearing this week, questions regarding our fundamental rights, his past positions as a lawyer, his legal philosophy on protecting basic rights is untenable for a man nominated to be the next Chief Justice. What does Roberts stand for? What is Roberts hiding? Why did he refuse to answer so many questions posed by the Senate? What are the secrets that he was covering up? And why is the Bush Administration refusing to turn over records from Roberts’ time as Deputy Solicitor General? “No comment” is not good enough.
I’m an ordinary citizen. John Roberts’ evasions and disrespect for the Senatorial hearings show him to be the WRONG choice for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
