The head honcho of Central Pacific Bank flew to Kaua’i to present a $30,000 check to leaders of Kaua’i Hospice, Inc., but not necessarily to make sure they make good on the loan they took out to build their new facility in Kukui Grove Village West.
Clint Arnoldus, Central Pacific Bank president and chief executive officer, along with some other bank officers, made the presentation of the oversized check at hospice’s current headquarters in the Isenberg Tract subdivision in Lihu’e, to hospice leaders and board members.
“Central Pacific Bank is not only our primary lender for the new facility, but they have graciously approved a $30,000 grant towards the capital campaign,” said Liana K.C. Soong, Kaua’i Hospice development and community liaison.
“This will be the largest donation ever given to a Kaua’i nonprofit organization by CPB,” she said.
This marked a major boost to the hospice Compass to Compassion campaign, Soong said.
Groundbreaking ceremonies were recently held to mark the start of construction of a new, permanent facility for Kaua’i Hospice.
When hospice officials move in, they will be the last in the state to have their own, permanent facility.
Sanae Tokumura of Solid Concepts, Inc. is one of the members of the Campaign Leadership team that is heading up a $2.2-million capital campaign.
“This should have been done a long time ago,” Tokumura commented. “The Big Island has a permanent place, Maui, and O’ahu. Kaua’i has needed a permanent home for a long time now.”
The empty lot that will be the permanent Kaua’i Hospice home sits next to the Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative offices on Pahe’e Street.
Hospice officials said they hope the new building will also serve as a community-resource center where people in the community can come together to use some of the space in their building.
The groundbreaking marks the end to the “nomadic” history of the hospice program here, and at the groundbreaking ceremonies various leaders spoke of the start of Kaua’i Hospice, and the constant need for space where they could hold their training sessions, meetings, and other hospice gatherings.
Hopefully, this new building will bring these searches to an end, and they will have space available for the community to use, hospice officials said.
Roberta Wallace-Cable is general chairwoman for the Campaign Leadership program, and Charlie King is the honorary chair for the Campaign Leadership.
The campaign theme is “Compass to Compassion.”
The mission of Kaua’i Hospice is to ensure the highest quality of life possible for individuals and their families facing life-threatening illnesses, to provide bereavement support to individuals, and to promote an understanding of hospice services.
