The silence has been deafening.
It has been two weeks and a day since a fatal Halloween accident claimed the life of one Anahola woman, and seriously injured two others in her family.
Out of respect for members of the well-known, well-liked and respected family, and the fact that no official county sources have revealed the identities, no media outlet has reported the name of the woman who died in the two-car accident on Kuhio Highway near Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Lihu’e.

Lei Nuesca is the one who died from injuries sustained in the morning accident. Her husband, Louis Nuesca, and son, Robert Nuesca, are in critical condi tion at The Queen’s Medical Center on O’ahu, said Danette Nuesca, Lei and Louis Nuesca’s eldest daughter.
From the time of the accident until three days ago, Louis Nuesca had been confined to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he used to work, but his condition wasn’t improving as doctors had hoped, so the decision was made to send him to O’ahu to be treated by specialists, Danette Nuesca said.
It had been family members’ plans to not disclose the names and conditions of the victims and the deceased until the men got better, although it was common knowledge around the island that the one who died in the accident was Lei Nuesca, and the ones seriously injured are her husband and son.
The reason Danette Nuesca came forward is to acknowledge the unreal outpouring of aloha and support she and other family members have been receiving, to thank all who have been praying for her family, voicing their support, and to let other friends and acquaintances know the status of her mother, father and brother, she said.
“We’re really grateful for what this island has done, and what they have meant to us. You know what? This island still has the heart,” said Danette Nuesca.
“That’s the true meaning of this island,” she said. People have been coming up to her, many of whom she doesn’t even know, telling her they knew her mother, and are sorry for her loss.
Others, not knowing that her mother died on Halloween, Monday, Oct. 31, were asking how her mother was doing, and were shocked to hear the news of her death, she said.
