HANAPEPE — After getting plucked by Waimea in their opening contest, the Kapa’a boys (1-1) rebounded by slicing and dicing Kaua’i (0-1), 3-1 at Hanapepe Stadium yesterday.
Chance Bukoski, Micah Ohlen, and Ikaika Fuerte netted the three goals, which all came in the second half, after both teams played to a 0-0 standstill at the halfway mark.
Both goalies were stingy from the start, but the men in green turned up the heat and gave Red Raider netminder Nelson Wiencek a ton of trouble in the second half.
Meanwhile, Warrior goalie Coty Salausa only allowed one goal, which came at the beginning of the last half by Seth Quesel.
“That was a completely different Kapa’a team out there. They picked it up a notch. I didn’t recognize my team out there. They totally outplayed us out there,” Kaua’i head coach Mark Brandeburg said.
The Red Raiders were playing without the services of one of their top offensive players in Mikiala Cup Choy, who should return next week against Waimea.
The Warrior girls (2-0) also relied on their defense for the win against the Red Raiders.
Kapa’a goalie Maegan Pablo was relentless all afternoon with numerous saves. Kaua’i’s (0-1) only goal came via Emma Makepa-Foley, late in the second half.
The Warrior offensive machine was paced by Brittney Carvalho and Ka’ala Leong. Carvalho scored the first goal of the game and Leong netted her goal at the start of the second half.
Amniesty Ragsac, last year’s KIF soccer player of the year, was tough once again on the defensive end.
Despite allowing two goals, Kaua’i’s K.C. Gaitos was strong throughout, with a host of saves.
The Red Raider JV girls busted out with an impressive 4-0 win over Kapa’a.
Skye Shimabukuro poked in two goals and displayed varsity-like abilities throughout the contest.
“She’s something special,” a Kapa’a parent remarked.
Kaua’i was up 1-0 at the half and slammed in three goals in the final stanza.
Melissa Iida and Courtney Wilson netted a goal each for the Red Raiders. Kathryn “Keila” Curtis was credited for the assist on Iida’s score.
It was a defensive struggle in the JV boys match, as Kaua’i and Kapa’a played to a 1-1 tie. Caleb Sarsona (Kapa’a) and Daren Catiggay-Bodano (Kaua’i) scored the only goals.
KIF soccer continues on Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium, with Kaua’i battling Waimea.
