Women’s self-defense class to start
Cynthia Madden, a certified black belt instructor, begins a new round of self-defense classes for women on Jan. 10.
The classes, to be held at Universal Karate of Kauai on Rice Street in Lihu‘e, are for females ages 12 and up.
There is a charge, and space is limited. The classes will be from 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. each Tuesday through Feb. 28.
“The last class was great, and the women left really strong and confident,” she said.
Women’s self-defense is a combination of physical and psychological techniques used to protect women from rape and violent crimes, she explained.
This self-defense class includes the following and much more: basic punching, blocking, choke defense, grab defense, and ground defense, where participants will get exercise as well as learn to fight; identifying and utilizing common weapons (car keys, etc.); mental training, knowing the predator’s mind, and when to fight back; and knowing your own mind and whether you have the traits that a predator looks for when selecting a victim.
Madden holds three firstplace titles in women’s blackbelt fighting, has trained in the martial arts for 15 years, and has been testing in real-life, selfdefense circumstances, she said.
Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing.
