LIHU’E — Effective today, recycling services will not be available at Kaua’i Resource Center until further notice.
According to county officials, the contract between the county and Island Recycling Inc., the vendor hired to run recycling operations at Kaua’i Resource Center, was terminated in November with a 90-day notice to vacate the premises.
A representative of IRI recently notified county officials that the company will be leaving the facility at the end of January and would need to close their recycling operation two weeks prior to pack everything up and move out.
While a new vendor is being sought, residents may take their recyclables to any Kaua’i Recycles drop bin conveniently located at eight different sites around the island including — Hanalei Transfer Station, Kojima Store parking lot in Kapa’a, Kmart parking lot in Lihu’e, Brennecke’s parking lot in Poipu, Lawa’i Post Office parking lot, ‘Ele’ele Shopping Center parking lot, Waimea Canyon Park and the Kekaha Landfill.
All of the recycling bins are designed with clearly marked compartments for aluminum, cardboard, glass, junk mail, newspaper, plastic No. 1 and plastic No. 2.
To redeem Hi5 beverage containers for refunds, residents may take their bottles to any certified redemption center — Princeville located at Prince Albert Park, open Wednesday and Friday, 9 a.m. to noon, Kapahi located near the Menehune Food Mart, open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nawiliwili at Reynold’s Recycling, open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Lihu’e located at Garden Isle Disposal, open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, Lawa’i Post Office, open Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the Kekaha Landfill, open Wednesday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Except for the Kekaha center, all of the above sites are closed for lunch, noon to 1 p.m.
Businesses are asked to contact Alvin Tadani with Garden Isle Disposal at 245-2372 to obtain information or make arrangements for delivery of recyclables to the company’s facility.
In the near future, businesses may redeem Hi5 beverage containers at the Kekaha Landfill. An official announcement from the county is expected to be made on this matter shortly.
