So after picking all four winners last weekend, it’s fitting since the way my football season has been going, to lose the first two games this weekend.
Not only did I lose the games for The Garden Island’s Gridiron Challenge, but I also lost two lunches to co-workers, Soren Velice (paginator) and Todd Vines (Essential Kaua’i).
I went out on a lonely limb (except for Shanna Pollard) in my Washington over Seattle pick.
However, as you might know by now, the Redskins dropped the ball and were ousted by the Hawks.
But probably the biggest disappointment was the Denver win over New England. So for the first time in two seasons, we’ll have a new Superbowl champ.
Dickie “Da Wizard” Chang, who got his picks into me extremely late (penalty for that?), picked both Denver and Seattle. Also, David Bice, Shelly Cobb, and Ron Wiley were wise with their Saturday picks.
But it’s not over by any means, especially since there are two more big games happening today.
Here’s what I thought when I picked Washington over Seattle: The Seahawks haven’t been to playoffs in forever and the city has by far the biggest flops in pro sports history.
Plus, Seattle played one of the easiest schedules in the league, but my biggest reason was how hot the Redskins were going into the playoffs. I thought they were unstoppable, but I stand corrected.
In the New England/Denver matchup, it was a bit easier to go with the two-time defending Superbowl champions.
I mean how could you choose Jake Plummer over Tom Brady? Well, most everyone did and I guess it’s a good thing to see two new teams in the big game this year.
Hopefully today’s picks (Carolina over Chicago and Indianapolis over Pittsburgh) will go in a different direction.
The Colts/Steelers game seems like the Denver/New England game at first glance, with the Patriots and Colts taking charge, but like the Broncos, Pittsburgh has a shot to shock Indianapolis, but that’s not happening.
The Panthers/Bears contest is a toss up, but I think that Carolina will make it all the way to the Superbowl (Yeah, they’ll beat Seattle).
Chicago defeated Carolina earlier in the season and the fact that the game is in the windy city, makes it very interesting.
So I’m down two lunches, but I plan to make at least one of them back by not picking Seattle to make it to the Superbowl. I just don’t think they’re quite ready for the big game and they aren’t as strong as their record indicates.
