HANAPEPE — Two quick goals by Kaua’i High School and an effective defense kept the Kapa’a girls scoreless, Wednesday night in Hanapepe.
Earlier in the evening, the Kapa’a boys came from a 2-0 halftime deficit to edge Kaua’i, 3-2 behind a penalty kick from Micah Ohlen in the final minute of play.
Ohlen finished with two goals in the win with Rayum Ribiero adding the other Warrior score.
Agu Garcia and Danny Riggle each scored to give the Kaua’i men their 2-0 halftime lead.
The Kapa’a women were frustrated by the Kaua’i defense as defensive efforts by Tahnee Shigematsu bottled up Kapa’a forward Ka’ala Leong and kept the ball away from the Warrior power players midfield.
Auika Muragin broke the ice in the first five minutes of play, besting Kapa’a defender Amniesty Ragsac for the score that came from the right pocket.
The Raiders followed up that play with a penalty kick by Megan Vento at about the 10-minute mark.
With upgrade Skye Shimabukuro starting in the forward position, the Red Raider coaching staff headed by Blanche Arakaki eventually shifted players around the field, with the Kaua’i defenders filling in the striker poles and the strikers becoming sweepers.
Kapa’a had at least three scoring opportunities on penalty kicks, but failed to close the door.
KIF soccer action continues Saturday as Kapa’a tangles with Waimea at Hanapepe Stadium.
Kapa’a athletic director Greg Gonsalves said that for this round, the order of play for both JV and varsity has been switched with the boys starting first.
