KALAHEO — Gee’s Angels kept their undefeated record alive with a 25-7 showing over Island School Wednesday at the county’s 12 and Under girls basketball games.
“We have two more games to go,” Cecil Gee, the coach for Gee’s Angels noted. “And, the toughest one is going to be next Wednesday when we play Wailua.”
Island School, who celebrated their first victory in two league seasons, was contained by the Angels’ defense that closed off the paint, and pestered Hayley Uliana and Hartley Dabin throughout the night.
Coming off an 8-0 opening period, the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center erupted in cheers as Island School’s Melissa Seymour opened the scorebooks on a bucket.
But that would be her only scoring contribution as Dabin took the brunt of traffic to score 5 points for the blueshirts.
Jessilyn Aki took the scoring lead for the Angels with 11 points followed by Mahea Hanie-Grace who finished with 5 points despite a first-half barrage of the hoop.
Maile Dreier finished with 4 points and played a key defensive role in the paint. Raquel Matayoshi and Lauren Claypoole, the Angels’ key board sweeper, finished with pairs each, and a digit from Kristle Henry rounded out the victory.
Earlier in the evening, Cassandra Owens set the pace for the Kaulupono Girls with 7 points followed by Searra Kaohi, Brandee Victorino, and Makamae Compoc each adding four points in their 22-11 win over Lihu‘e Hanano.
Vakeesha Lagazo finished with three points for the Kaulupono Girls.
Lacey Lucas took the scoring lead for Lihu‘e with four points followed by Makana Fujimoto, Courtney Contrades, and Taylor Garcia each adding pairs.
A digit from Siarah Perreira rounded out the effort.
Malia Kagawa finished with 12 points and Erin Navarro chipped in seven as Island Heat rose above Ha‘aheo 30-14 in the first of two games played Saturday, Feb. 11 at Kaua‘i High School.
Michaela Rapozo and Mia Cabulisan led the Ha‘aheo effort with four points apiece.
Shelley Koerte finished with 9 points and Sanida Pahulehua added seven as Waimea soared over Lihu‘e Hanano 29-12 in the finale.
Barba and Fujimoto led the Lihu‘e effort with four and three points respectively.
