The Oscar-nominated film “Pride and Prejudice” makes its way to the Kukui Grove Cinemas in Lihu‘e today, and will play for only one week.
Based on the novel by Jane Austen, “Pride” is the tale of love and misunderstanding in 18th-century, class-conscious England.
The Bennet sisters, Elizabeth or Lizzie (Keira Knightley), Jane (Rosamund Pike), Lydia (Jena Malone), Mary (Talulah Riley) and Kitty (Carey Mulligan), have all been raised by their mother (Brenda Blethyn), who is fixated on finding husbands for her daughters.
However, the spirited Lizzie is encouraged by her father (Donald Sutherland) to live her own life.
A wealthy bachelor, Mr. Bingley (Simon Woods), moves into a mansion near the Bennet residence, bringing along with him a circle of friends and military officers. The Bennet sisters find themselves involved in relationships.
Oldest sister Jane attaches herself to Mr. Bingley, while Lizzie meets Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFayden).
Because of the feelings she has for Mr. Darcy, she declines a marriage proposal from her distant cousin, Mr. Collins (Tom Hollander). Although Lizzie has the support from her father, this surprises her mother.
Mr. Bingley abruptly leaves town, breaking Jane’s heart.
Lizzie blames Mr. Darcy for having contributed to his leaving.
The girls are left with an affirmation of what’s important in life.
The film includes an all-star cast. The father, Sutherland, is a two-time Golden Globe winner.
The mother, Blethyn, is a two-time Academy Award nominee, and Knightley, who was recently nominated for a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award, just snagged her first Oscar nomination earlier this week. (See related story on Oscars).
“Pride” was also nominated for Academy Awards in three other categories: best art direction by Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer; costume design by Jacqueline Durran; and original score by Dario Marionella.
Knightley starred in such films as “Domino,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” and “Bend it Like Beckham.” Academy Award winner Dame Judi Dench, who just picked up another nomination for her role in “Mrs. Henderson Presents,” also stars.
Shot entirely in England, “Pride” was directed by awardwinning director Joe Wright, mostly known for his television mini-series work “Charles II: The Power and the Passion,” for which he won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award, the United Kingdom’s version of the Oscars.
The screenplay was written by Deborah Moggach, the writer of the television mini-series “Close Relations.” Also opening up this week is “Brokeback Mountain.” Owners of the Kukui Grove Cinemas pushed up its opening a week.
