The six girls that formed the core of the Island School 12 and Under girls basketball team persisted through a clean defeated season in the county’s 14 and Under league, and with just one more game on their league schedule for the 12 and Under program, finally broke into the winner’s circle Monday.
Chelsea Chock iced the win with two critical second half buckets, one in the fifth, and the other in the sixth period as Island School capped a 16-10 victory over the Westside Hornets who swarmed over the girls in blue throughout the night.
Island School guard Hartley Dabin topped the scoring with 8 points in the win with Hayley Uliana, playing the transition post, adding four points.
Five Hornets each scored a bucket in their effort as Moana Lee, Rea Accorda, Shannon Vidinha, and Cheyenne Duarte broke into the scorebooks.
“It feels good,” the mother of Chelsea and Megan Chock said following their hard-fought victory.
In the finale, Wailua came back from a 6-4 first period deficit to clinch a 34-17 win over Ha‘aheo.
Kaira Kupihea finished with a game-high 21 points in the win, a lot of her scores coming from putbacks and second efforts in heavy traffic as the pinkshorts, despite being out-heighted, persisted in their defensive efforts.
Kamalei Higa added 6 points to the Wailua victory followed by Makamae Higa finishing with five, and a pair from Tori Waialeale-Batad rounding out the math.
Malu Vegas bulled for 6 points along with Michaela Rapozo to lead the Ha‘aheo effort. Mia Cabulisan finished with three, and a pair from Caitlyn Rapozo rounded out the effort.
Micah Dunhour finished with 8 points, Allan Bolante and Kahale Fagarang each chipped in 7 points as Hanama‘ulu nipped the Gee Unit A, 31-30 in the opening game of the county’s 12 and Under boys basketball, Saturday.
Bradley Heiser led the Unit A with 14 points followed by Hunter Bilbo adding six.
Keoni Kiezie finished with 14 points, and Ka‘awa Solomon added eight as Eastside soared over the Kalaheo Tigers 50-21 in Saturday’s second game in Kalaheo. Shawn Tavares finished with a dozen markers to lead the Tigers’ effort.
Adam Clark notched 10 points to lead the Gee Unit B to a 27-9 win over the Kaua‘i Fire Raiders in the finale. Kalechi Young and Kea Nacolatabua each finished with six points to help the Unit B win.
Kasen Delos Reyes, Isaac Ramoyan, and Kameron Perez each scored for the Raiders with six, two, and a point respectively.
