It’s been awhile since a Kaua’i-born pitcher graced the mound for the University of Hawai’i baseball team, but that’s going to change thanks to former Kaua’i High School standout Mark Rodrigues, who is slated to start on Friday against San Diego State.
The junior started the alumni game on Jan. 28, giving up just one run on two hits with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched.
Rodrigues was taken twice in the MLB draft, going in the 29th round in 2001 and the 37th round in 2002.
The lefty is the first Kauaian to pitch for UH since Norman Holt Jr. The ‘Bows are coming off their third-straight winning season, while placing third in the WAC last year.
They return all-conference players from last season in Matt Inouye, Darrell Fisherbaugh, Esteban Lopez, and Joe Spiers.
K5 will broadcast tonight’s game, starting at 6:35 p.m., as well as tomorrow and Friday night’s contest, which is when Rodrigues will make his debut.

A technical foul on Hawai’i coach Riley Wallace gave USU a 15-point lead with 3:04 left in the half. USU then pushed to a 36-19 halftime edge after two consecutive field goals in the paint by Matheus. UH battles Idaho tomorrow at 5 p.m. (HST).
