The sun came out! Lt. Larry Groenleer was happy as he, Gene Redden and “Chef” Ricky Butay got to work setting up the Westside Kokua Soup Kitchen which will open to the public on April 17. Gene said they’re still looking for volunteers, and Thrift Shop manager Erika Siliado (the Thrifty Mart half moon was ono!) was busy getting all those “new” things in the shop. Actually, “Chef” Ricky also knows Jason Ringor, since they both graduated from the Western Culinary Institute in Oregon. Jason is now working on Maui. FYI, Jason’s parents, Leonard Ringor and Janice Ringor, are the ones who know how to do the party thingie at the Lights on Rice parade (mark your calendars, it’s Dec. 1 this year).
Got to see Kehau Kato at the county’s 14-and-under boys’ basketball games. The sky was clear, and Kehau got to enjoy a respite from storm duty, as did coach Clyde Vito, Charlie Ortiz and Gene Padilla (he got to see Punahou and St. Louis play ball on O‘ahu over the weekend), and a lot of the parents who were at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center Monday night. Pat Iwasaki (his son plays for coach Fred Sasan) was excited about all the new Toyota cars that are in the process of moving into their showroom. But, coach Fred is looking ahead to Thursday, when they gotta face coach Steven Matsumoto and the Southside boys (overtime again?). Coach Cecil Gee was doing a double bill, and Gee Unit A’s Justin Ramos even filled in as a scorekeeper.
