WAILUA — At around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, a Kaua’i Police Department officer responded to a reported disturbance on Lanakila Road in Wailua Houselots, said KPD Capt. Alejandro Quibilan. Upon arrival, the police officer observed a 53-year-old male holding two knives.
WAILUA — At around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, a Kaua’i Police Department officer responded to a reported disturbance on Lanakila Road in Wailua Houselots, said KPD Capt. Alejandro Quibilan.
Upon arrival, the police officer observed a 53-year-old male holding two knives. The officer immediately called for backup. “It appeared to the officer to have started from a domestic dispute,” said Quibilan.
Members of the KPD’s Special Services Team were called to the scene to assist with the situation. A standoff occurred and the man moved across the street to the parking lot of the Wailua Houselots Park. After more than two hours of negotiations, the man became agitated and irrational, leaving officers no choice but to use force to take him into custody. “The Special Services Team used less-than-lethal munitions,” Quibilan said.
That type of munition is a low-velocity round in the form of a bean bag, rubber, or two different types of foam. The man was taken into custody around 5:30 p.m.
“He wanted to resolve the argument with the female, but (the officers) had him in the park,” Quibilan said. “He wouldn’t negotiate and it was getting dark, so they had to end it (after two hours).”
Residents gathered to watch but were kept back by police. “Officers shut the roadway and kept people in their houses telling them to lock their doors,” Quibilan said.
After being taken into custody, the man was brought to Wilcox Hospital for treatment and evaluation, and later transported to Mahelona Hospital for treatment.
According to police, charges are pending in this case.
