Last night was the start of the West Kauai Lenten Series of sermons that will go on every Thursday evening at 7 p.m. during Lent.
The services will be spread out to be preached by different ministers at different churches.
Mary Lindquist, vicar from the Episcopal Church on West Kauai, explained that the churches coming together to host a Lenten series is a way to show their support for one another.
“There’s a variety of perspectives involved here,” she said.
“We’ve got Catholic priests to evangelists to Protestant ministers, and even though we may not agree on certain things, we can all do this together,” she said.
About 10 to 15 ministers are participating in this series, Lindquist said.
“So many of the churches are small,” she said. “So it’s helpful to work together. It’s a little less demanding on one minister this way.”
Members of one church will host each sermon, taught by a minister from another church, each Thursday night up till the celebration of Easter.
There will also be pupus and refreshments served afterwards, so people are welcome to stay after the sermon to socialize, Lindquist said.
There will be collections taken up at each sermon, with the proceeds going to officials at Nana’s House in Waimea, to help serve people in need there.
