$350 million in bonds sold; proceeds for schools, libraries
Governor Linda Lingle announced in a press release that sate leaders have sold $350 million of the Series DI General Obligation Bonds at an interest rate of 4.39 percent, which ranks among the lowest interest rates achieved in the past 30 years.
The bond sale caps a successful credit review process in which Fitch Ratings upgraded the state from AA- to AA.
Fitch officials reported that, “financial operations have been maintained soundly, even under stressful periods.”
Standard & Poor’s reaffirmed the state’s rating at AA-, and also maintained its “positive” outlook on the credit.
Moody’s reaffirmed its rating of Aa2, reporting that the rating incorporates the state’s “sound financial position bolstered by strong revenue growth.”
“Hawai‘i’s strong credit ratings reflect the strength of the statewide economy and this administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline,” said Lingle.
Retail demand for Hawai‘i’s bonds was strong both nationally and at the state level, with $41.7 million of bonds purchased during the initial retail order period. Proceeds from the bond sale will be used for improvements to public buildings and facilities, including elementary and secondary schools, community college and university facilities and public libraries.
Whale-watch fund-raiser scheduled
A whale watch and snorkel sail, to benefit Hawaii Children’s Theatre and the Island School Media Club, is scheduled for March 19.
The event is aboard a Captain Andy’s Sailing Adventures craft, and in addition to benefitting participants in Hawaii Children’s Theatre productions, will help send Island School students to Kenya in July to visit with fellow students and brainstorm of ways to educate young
Kenyans about HIV/AIDS, fund-raiser organizers said in a press release.
The Island School’s Media Club is called JUMP (Juveniles Use Media Power).
While in Kenya, they will link up with Kenyans in high schools with their own JUMP clubs, and work on various projects for raising awareness about the problem of HIV/AIDS.
The sail will be aboard a large trimaran.
Tickets are an $85 donation. Food and drinks will be provided.
Space is very limited, so
organizers are encouraging those interested to reserve tickets now by calling Debra Blachowiak, 639-2437.
