WAILUA — Witnesses reported hearing two small explosions as a fire broke out on Eggerking Road in Wailua Houselots around 10:30 a.m. yesterday.
“I was sitting in the carport of my home a couple doors down when I heard two booms,” said neighbor Janice Henry. “Almost immediately I had ashes falling on my home.”
Billowing clouds of black smoke rose from the home shortly after the start of the blaze that spread to the trees surrounding the structure. “The palms were on fire when I got here and there were thick, thick clouds of black smoke,” said Nani Querubin who lives in Wailua Homesteads.
Querubin was driving by with her son and a friend when they saw the fire erupt after the small explosions. When they arrived at the home, the tenant was sleeping she said. “My friend Perry woke him (the tenant) and got him away from the fire and then he and my son got out the hose and started to douse the fire,” said Querubin.
Querubin’s 14-year-old son Isaiah Monis and the friend continued to hose the flames until firefighters arrived a short time later.
One neighbor said he heard a boom and then saw people running over from the nearby soccer fields to see what was going on. “I heard that the fire was in a storage area, not the house,” the neighbor said.
According to a county press release, the fire broke out in a plywood storage shed that contained “multiple types of flammable material.”
The neighbor who called in the fire said they had heard an explosion shortly before the flames erupted, states the county press release.
No one was injured in the blaze that is under investigation as to the cause.
