A relief team of 10 members of the Kalaheo Missionary Church recently returned from a nine-day trip to New Orleans, where they helped clean up homes affected by Hurricane Katrina.
According to a press release, their mission was to clean and repair about six homes, including their home base.
While there, they carried out loads of debris, did repair work, restored electricity, plumbing and gas lines, and were a source of encouragement and blessings to those affected by the hurricane.
Despite being in the unaccustomed cold weather of the region, the devastation and stench, the team worked, and was able to accomplish much of their mission.
Water had not yet been re-established at their home base, so cooking meals for the team became a problem.
However, they were invited into a number of homes to share meals, which testified to locals’ hospitality despite their greatly reduced circumstances, their appreciation for the work the team was doing, and the love and good will shared by the team.
Last week, another team of church members traveled to Kenya on a medical mission.
That team will return during the second week of May.
