At their weekly meeting recently, the Kauai Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol Cadets were treated to a tour of the Billabong/Hawaiian Airlines Grumman Albatross, CAP leaders said in a press release.
This vintage airplane was built in 1953, and is one of the only remaining airplanes of its kind.
This amphibious airplane is probably the only one in the world actively flying on and over saltwater seas.
The Civil Air Patrol Cadets learned that the mission of this plane is to fly Billabong-sponsored professional surfers to remote surf sites yet to be discovered.
They will also fly to the world-class surf competitions around the South Pacific and Asia.
Introduction to the many facets of aviation is the primary mission of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet program.
Kauai Cadets meet from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Tuesday at the Lihu‘e Airport “T” Hangars.
