HANAPEPE — “At the beginning of the season, no one gave us any chance of winning the KIF,” said Paulette Lum, Waimea High School boys tennis coach.
But Saturday, the Menehune boys clinched the KIF title with a 4-1 win over Kaua’i High School at the Hanapepe Tennis Courts.
Kaua’i swept the exhibition matches with the team of John-Louis Vento and Sterling Inouye defeating the Waimea boys doubles team of Anson Acain and Michael Haack, 8-5.
The Red Raider team of Christopher Webster and Alan Castillo was also victorious over the Menehune team of Craig Ponting and Daniel Kalauawa.
Earlier in the day, Vento suffered defeat at the hands of Waimea’s No. 1 boys singles player Kollin Morikawa who took that match 6-4, 6-4.
Inouye was defeated by Waimea No. 2 boys singles player Jake Anderson 6-0, 6-0.
Darrel Nonaka and Jordan Sato teamed up to defeat the Raider squad of Castillo and Webster, 6-4, 6-3.
Tyren Sakuda and Froilan Tyler rounded out the Waimea wins by downing the Kaua’i team of Christopher Barich and Sheadon Ringor, 6-3, 6-1.
Kaua’i’s sole boys’ victory came in a hard-fought doubles win when Reyn Balocan and Jeremy Ferguson combined to defeat Waimea’s Ruben Nonaka and Harold Shimono, Jr. 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
“These boys deserve and earned this KIF championship through hard work, good discipline, athleticism and above all teamwork,” Lum said.

Kaua’i will take on Kapa’a at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts Saturday starting at noon.
