There will be ample supplies of coffee from Starbucks and pastries from the Safeway bakery ready for the clean-up project set for the Kamalani Playground and Lydgate Park tomorrow starting at 7:30 a.m. This project is in connection with the celebration of Earth Day tomorrow.
Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, and has since become a worldwide project to better preserve the earth.
Here on Kaua‘i, there will be celebrations and activities held across the island in hopes of better educating the community on how to care for the environment.
Thomas Noyes, general coordinator for The Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park, will be leading a clean-up at the Kamalani Playground and Lydgate Park in Wailua.
“What we’re doing is building a community,” Noyes said. “When people are more aware of their surroundings, then they will better preserve it for 2006the long-term.” While there will be coffee and pastries, volunteers are encouraged to bring two-inch or three-inch paint brushes, small artists’ paint brushes, ladders, plastic containers for linseed oil sealer, and belt or orbital power sanders with spare abrasives, for use in maintaining playground equipment.
“When people become more aware of the right here and right now, on Kaua‘i, in Kapa‘a and at the parks, it will extend that attitude to the world in general,” said Noyes.
On the other side of the island, at Koke‘e State Park, a group will gather together for a spring meditation retreat.
Dawna Su, who had been busy working on the logistics of the retreat, said the purpose of this retreat is to influence people to take care of the environment, not just on Earth Day, but in their everyday lives.
“We’re spiritually eclectic,” she said. “We do a lot of deep meditation with nature and the earth. This is a very small group, and (a) very ecologically-conscious group, and we hope to build the exchange (of) information about how we do take care of the earth, and to be very conscious.” Judy Dalton of the Sierra Club Kaua‘i chapter said there will a beach clean-up at Kealia tomorrow morning. Sierra Club Kaua‘i chapter members do clean-ups all throughout the year, and she said the group members definitely want to make sure they scheduled one for Earth Day.
There is a cleanup at Po‘ipu Beach Park tomorrow as well, from 8 a.m. to noon, followed by an Earth Day celebration at the park from noon to 5 p.m., with catered lunch and snacks, water slides for the keiki, and live music at 2 p.m., organizers said.
