Lawrence Herbert Helm
Lawrence Herbert Helm died March 29, 2006, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital of complications due to ALS at the age of 74.
Born June 2, 1932, in Yokohama, Japan, his family moved to California where Larry graduated from Piedmont High School in the Bay Area.
He attended the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in forestry and served in the Army during the Korean War. Moving to Lake Tahoe, he began his own successful real estate business, Helm of Homewood.
Larry moved his family to Gargle, Calif. and began his second successful real estate business, Mohawk Realty. Retiring in 1988, he moved to Lake Almanor, Calif.
Through the years, Larry was a passionate golfer. He supervised youth programs, served numerous administrative positions and happily offered his instruction to friends, family and newcomers.
Larry traveled Kaua’i every winter for over a decade and finally moved permanently in 2002.
He is preceded in death by a daughter, Dana. He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Jean daughter, Linda; son, Andrew; and two grandchildren, Michael and Katie as well as his hanai family, Colette, Loren and Trudy.
There will be no services.
John M. English
John M. English died April 12, 2006, while at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu at the age of 82, after a month battle following cancer surgery.
Born in Paia, Maui, on Jan. 29, 1924, he was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, he later served both with the Army and Air National Guard Units on Kaua’i and retired with the rank of Major. Following his Air Guard retirement, he was employed by the Mahelona State Hospital and was retired as the hospital administrator. He was also a dedicated fisherman and spent many hours on his fishing boat named “Emmy.”
Preceded in death by his wife, Emaline Mokihana English, he is survived by one daughter, Gwendolyn Rezentes of Kapa’a, one brother, Arthur English of Maui, three sisters: Myrna Kaholokula of Maui, Maile Zanakis of Honolulu, and Geneive Gildrsleve of Chicago. Also son-in-law Wally Rezentes; three grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family members and friends may call on Tuesday. April 25, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kapaia from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Father Bill. Burial to follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Jose ‘Joe the Barber’ Alaibilla
Jose “Joe the Barber” Alaibilla of Kapa’a died on April 19, 2006, at Wlcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 99.
He was born on March 18, 1905 in Raois, Vigan Philippines and was the proprietor of Joe’s Barber Shop. He is survived by one daughter, Judy (Stanley) Sato, two sons; Gerald (Pam) Alaibilla and Sky (Edna) Alaibilla, all of Kapa’a, five grandchildren, nine great-grand-children, numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, April 27, at St. Catherine Church with visitation from 9 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 11 a.m.
The staff of Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Joseph N. Mirafuentes
Joseph N. Mirafuentes of Delano, Calif. died on March 31. 2006.
Joseph was born in Koloa, Kauai on March 3, 1925. He retired as Federal Produce Inspector.
He also was a veteran.
He is preceded in death by his wife Pearl. He is survived by brothers, Manuel (Judy) Mirafuentes of Waipahu, HI; Domi Mirafuentes of Pearl City, HI; sisters, Marie Verano, Pearl City, HI and Nora Mehio of Wahiawa, HI. and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Rosary was held at his brother Manuel’s residence, in Waipahu, held by his niece Renee Molique. Arrangements were made by Delero Funeral Home.
A celebration of life, will be held on Monday April 24, 2006 at St. Raphael’s Church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at the Hanapepe Veterans Cemetery.
Richard Foon Yip Wong
Richard Foon Yip Wong of Kapaa passed away on April 20, 2006 at Hale Kupuna Heritage Home at the age of 93. He was born in Kapaa, Hawaii on March 17, 1913.
He is survived by two daughters; Karen (Ronald) Ogata and Marsha (Warren) Mizutani, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Kapaa at 4:00 p.m.

Gary James Gandia
Gary James Gandia of Honolulu died April 16, 2006, at the age of 54.
Born May 11, 1951, in Honolulu, he was chief night auditor at Marinr Surf Hotel.
He is survived by his mother: Maxine Gandia, father: James Gandia, bgothers Derek Gandia and Lindsey Gandia; sisters Maralani Gandia-Wong and Patty Coleman; many nieces and nephews.
The family requests no contributions and suggests aloha attire.
Friends may visit with the family at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 28, in the Borthwick Makai Chapel on O’ahu, where services will be held at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Fr. Henry Sabos. Burial will be at later date.
