Gary James Gandia
Gary James Gandia of Honolulu died April 16, 2006, at the age of 54.
Born May 11, 1951, in Honolulu, he was chief night auditor at Marine Surf Hotel.
He is survived by his mother: Maxine Gandia, father: James Gandia, brothers Derek Gandia and Lindsey Gandia; sisters Maralani Gandia-Wong and Patty Coleman; many nieces and nephews.
The family requests no contributions and suggests aloha attire.
Friends may visit with the family at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 28, in the Borthwick Makai Chapel on O’ahu, where services will be held at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Fr. Henry Sabos. Burial will be at later date.
John M. English
John M. English died April 12, 2006, while at Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu at the age of 82, after a month-long battle following cancer surgery.
Born in Pa’ia, Maui, on Jan. 29, 1924, he was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, he later served both with the Army and Air National Guard Units on Kaua’i and retired with the rank of Major. Following his Air Guard retirement he was employed by the Mahelona State Hospital and was retired as the hospital administrator. He was also a dedicated fisherman and spent many hours on his fishing boat named “Emmy.”
Preceded in death by his wife, Emaline Mokihana English, he is survived by one daughter, Gwendolyn Rezentes of Kapa’a, one brother, Arthur English of Maui, three sisters: Myrna Kaholokula of Maui, Maile Zanakis of Honolulu, and Geneive Gildrsleve of Chicago. Also son-in-law Wally Rezentes; three grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family members and friends may call on Tuesday, April 25, at Immaculate Conception Church in Kapaia from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Father Bill. Burial to follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Allen Shimizu
Allen Tadao Shimizu of Hanapepe died at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital on April 17, 2006, at the age of 57.
Born in Waimea on June 29, 1948, he was a service man with Gay & Robinson.
Preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Yoshie Shimizu, he is survived by his wife, Beatrice “Sweet heart” Shimizu; two sons, Matthew (Hannah Soller) Shimizu of Hanapepe and Cory Shimizu of Lihu’e; daughter, Kuuipo (Garrett Higa) Shimizu of Hanapepe; one granddaughter; three brothers, Raymond (Susan) Shimizu of Gardena, Calif., Glen (Mildred) Shimizu of Gardena, and Michael Shimizu of Lihu’e; two sisters, Lillian (Kerry) Yokoyama of Waimea and Edith (Robert) Harada of Gardena; numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 29 at the Hanapepe Hongwanji, service at 11 a.m. followed by burial at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Victoria Hilacion
Victoria Racelo Hilacion of Lihu’e, died April 13, 2006, at Valley Hospital, Las Vegas, Nev., at the age of 75.
Born in Koloa on Nov. 17, 1930, she was a retired nurse.
Preceded in death by her son, Phil Hilacion, Jr., she is survived by her husband of 561/2 years, Phil Hilacion Sr. of Lihu’e; three daughters: Adele (Jeffrey) Silva of Kalaheo, Sharon (David) Abreu Jr. of Lawai and Jocelyn Malina of Las Vegas, and Lee Malina of San Francisco, eight grand-children; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be on Sunday, April 23, at Aloha Church in Lihu’e from 3 p.m. with service beginning at 3:30 p.m. Aloha Church is located across Taco Bell on Kaumuali’i Highway in Lihu’e.
Arrangements are being handled by the staff of Palm Mortuary.
Christina Acoba
Christina Acoba of Waimea, died at her home on April 15, 2006, at the age of 71.
Born in Koloa, on Aug. 7, 1934, she was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Joveto “Jay” Acoba; two sons, Corwin (Joanne) Acoba of Hanapepe and Christopher (Karen) Acoba of Hanapepe; daughter, Joveen (Byron Wong) Acoba of Waimea; five grandchildren, Bryanne (Gordon) Wotherspoon of Bothell, Wash., Kalawe-Kalei K.Y. Wong of Everett, Wash., Kaioli Vi Acoba of Kalaheo, Chyson and Kicah Acoba, both of Hanapepe; great-grandchild, Brydon M. Wotherspoon of Bothell, Wash.; brother, Lawrence Ariola of Australia, three sisters, Florence Begonia of Wahiawa, O’ahu, Celia Dana of Hanama’ulu and Carol Sonoda of Honolulu, O’ahu; hanai son, Pat Baniaga of Kaumakani; two hanai daughters, Fran Acoba of Kalaheo and Nadine Mier of ‘Ele’ele.
Friends may visit with the family from 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, at the Waimea Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Mission Church; Mass to follow. The family suggests aloha attire and requests that flowers be omitted.
