State Department of Land and Natural Resources officials, in partnership with those from the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program, have updated the “Managing Boat Wastes” publication, and developed other new educational materials to help boaters care for their vessels while minimizing impacts to the environment, they said in a press release.
Copies of the publication are available at the DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation office in the Kukui Grove Professional Village, 4370 Kukui Grove St., Suite 109, Lihu‘e.
This program, partially funded by a grant received under the federal Clean Vessel Act, provides helpful tips to safely operate and maintain boats without impacting the environment.
Important information on the handling of used oil, fuel spills and solvents are included, with proper disposal of vessel wastewater highlighted.
Phone numbers, locations, and instructions for use of each pump-out facility throughout Hawai‘i’s small-boat-harbor system are provided on a handy brochure that can be kept onboard for future reference.
The brochure is also available online at www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/dbor/dbor.htm “DLNR’s goal is to preserve and protect our coastal resources,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.
“With the increasing amount of statewide boating activity, boaters need to be informed of the impacts their boat’s waste may have on the environment,” he said.
