PUHI — This is the last weekend to visit the student art exhibit displayed at the Kaua‘i Community College Learning Resource Center library.
The exhibit closes Monday.
Students of the KCC painting and drawing classes joined friends and family last week for the end-of-the-semester art reception and exhibit.
The reception began with their teacher, local artist Kyungsoo Lee, thanking everyone for coming, and congratulating the students for a great, artistic semester.
For it, Lee selected four pieces from each student to be displayed at the library.
Susan Carlisle, who works as a nurse, is in her third art class at KCC, and happily showed off four of her acrylic paintings.
“I always wanted to start drawing and painting. I’m just keeping with it,” she said.
Carlisle started with the drawing class, and has since tried her hand at painting.
“I feel I’m improving. It’s added a new dimension in my life,” she said.
Classmate Kyoko Ishigami, also in her third art class, also made the transition from drawing to painting.
“I could never draw, but only slowly,” said Ishigami.
“I couldn’t do it at all, and I thought painting was not my style. I don’t know how to use the brush, how to mix the color,” Ishigami said. “(Lee) is a good teacher.”
Ishigami, who lives and works in Princeville, has enjoyed the painting class so much that she now has a little studio in her home, and said that she will continue to paint.
“Every time I do a project, it’s different every time. It’s not easy, but slowly it comes out,” she said.
What will she do with all her paintings?
“Maybe I’ll frame them and put them in my house. I have to do more if I’m going to give them away,” she said.
