PO‘IPU — After a nice run in her very first state tennis championships, Kapa‘a’s Lyndsey Tom was bounced out of contention in the semis by No. 2 seed Brooke Doane of Kamehameha-O‘ahu, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Tom now plays for third place this morning at 8 a.m. against No. 4 seed Christy Pagatpatan of Waipahu.
Tom’s road to the semis continued with a win over No. 9 seed Jackie Owens of Lahainaluna, 6-4, 6-1.
Then the No. 7 seed took out No. 3 seed Paige Sumida of Waiakea in a tough match, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Down by a set and two games in the second set, the Warrior freshman climbed back into the contest.
“I was kind of nervous. She is a lot older than me. She’s a senior. I just thought that I wanted to get one game and go from there,” Tom said.
As the match went along, Tom began to pick up some momentum.
“I wasn’t just going to give up. Down 0-2 in the second set, I won the next game and started to gain some confidence,” Tom said.
The victory put Tom in a company by herself in Warriorland.
“No one from Kapa‘a tennis has ever made it this deep at states,” Kapa‘a coach Jon Tom said.
In other KIF-related matches, Kula’s Kyle Barrett fell to No. 4 seed Mikey Lim of Punahou, who is the defending boys singles state champion. Lim dominated in straight sets over the No. 10 seed, 6-0, 6-3 in the third round.
Waimea’s Darrel Nonaka and Froilan Tyler made it all the way to the third round, but were ousted by Mililani’s Holden Au and Aaron Kawamoto, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Kaua‘i’s Reyn Balocan and Sterling Inouye ran into a brick wall in round two, as the tournament’s No. 2 seed Daniel Adachi and Marcus Pearman of Iolani made quick work of the Red Raider duo.
Kapa‘a’s Crystine Ito was overmatched by No. 1 seed Kalei Gora of St. Francis, who handed the Warrior junior a couple of goose eggs, 6-0, 6-0 in the third round.
The champions of each division will be decided this morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts.
