Pastor Bruce Baumgartner for the Calvary Chapel Kaua‘i has been planning to help members of the community to “Get ready 4 the Summer.”
“We’ve been reaching out to the community by going out to the skate parks and reaching out to those kids and we started planning this weekend of activities,” Baumgartner said. “It kind of grew into this concert, and we’ve been inviting other youth ministries. We’re doing this ‘Get ready 4 summer’ thing with the four because it’s just fun.”
They’ll be playing host to the “Get ready 4 Summer” evening on Sunday, starting at 5:30 p.m. and lasting until 8:30 p.m. at the Calvary Chapel Kaua‘i grounds located on the Kapa‘a Bypass road.
Baumgartner and friends have been constructing a skateboard and mountainboard park for this weekend where kids get to hang out and learn the sports.
“There are two areas that will do very well for it. Right now it comes from the road from the upper part of the property and goes down the valley, and goes back and forth,” Baumgartner said. “Eventually we’ll go on to make the course go around, but we’re taking it slow.”
Baumgartner explained that mountain boarding is a new trend that is like a combination of skateboarding and snowboarding.
“You’re not strapped in like a snowboard and the wheels on it are bigger and full of air unlike the skateboard,” he said.
Baumgartner said skating and mountain boarding is something that special guest Justin Fox can relate to. Fox is a Christian musician from Southern California and will be giving a free performance.
“He’s going to be here on island. He’s a surfer and skateboarder and he definitely relates to the crowd,” he said. “There will be a video presentation while the kids are skating and then we’ll move into the tent for a concert so the kids can be inspired by the message.”
The event is free and open to the public.
