PUHI – “Billy,” a video about the effects of drug use, ended up the big winner for the Chiefess Kamakahelei video class at the HMSA/Sassy Magazine Teen Video Awards held on O‘ahu recently.
The animation project by Allegra Bundschuh and Heather Hamamura had earlier taken an honorable mention in the Judges Choice at the Olelo Film Festival.
“Billy” finished second place in the anti-drug category at the HMSA/Sassy Magazine event to earn the school a $500 prize.
“Before and After,” another anti-drug video produced by Kiara Chong and Teal Basquez, finished in third place in the anti-drug category at the HMSA/Sassy Magazine event. That prize was a $250 check presented to Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School.
Earlier at the Olelo event, “Before and After” was a finalist.
“Healthy Start,” produced by Sierra Mayer and Duke Wellington, was a finalist in the anti-drug category.
The CKMS video class had entered five entries in the HMSA/Sassy Magazine competition with two eventually earning medals.
Kevin Matsunaga, the video class instructor, also announced that “Don’t Let it Burn,” a video by Carly Matsumoto and Randee Layosa, captured first place honors in the middle school PSA category at the Student Television Network Spring Nationals competition.
“Don’t Let it Burn,” a project that depicts what a person can lose when taking drugs, was also the best PSA in the middle school division at the recent Olelo event.
Kendra Ishida and Lauren Fernandez produced “Savannah,” a video project that finished with honorable mention honors at the spring nationals.
These and other award-winning projects were available for parents and the community to view at the class’s year-end family night that was held at the school’s cafeteria, May 19.
The class also shared its field trip to California via video that the students captured on the trip.
