A fun night of surf films begins as the sun goes down over Hanalei Bay this Sunday at the Hanalei Community Center.
After the annual Pinetrees Longboard Surf Contest, four local, independent filmmakers will host an outdoor surf movie night featuring the premiere of “The World Recording to Will,” by Hanalei’s Will Winneguth.
The new “Down the Road Again” film project follows a five-week holiday through Australia and New Zealand dedicated to chasing waves, surf contests, and anything other than work.
Winneguth offers up the scenic and cityscape, wildlife, wild local music, and wild surfing and skateboarding.
The festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with “Brady’s World,” a 30-minute film all shot in Wainiha. Brady Cushwood goes deep into the Wainiha underground.
At 7 p.m., the band C.R.S. will play a one-hour set while the highlights of the weekend’s Pinetrees contest blaze across the big screen.
Clips of the two-day contest will be captured by Joel Guy, in a “make-movies-or-die,” no-edit film style.
At 8 p.m., “Shane’s Surf Expo” offers a unique, water perspective shot by Kaua‘i’s own University of California Santa Barbara film student, Shane Tasic.
The one-hour “The World Recording to Will” finishes out the night’s entertainment.
The whole event is free of charge with the support of the local businesses who have made this event possible.
Sponsors include Kai Kane, Polynesia Cafe, Bali Hai Photo Co., Approved Mortgage, Ching Young Village Shopping Center, Tropical Taco and Hanalei Music and Video.
Food, shave ice and soft drinks will be available from the Waipa Foundation and the Hawaii Ocean Film Festival.
This is a drug- and alcohol-free event. No coolers will be allowed.
