Baldwin and Kaimuki’s Chan Kim grabbed the 2006 David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA State Boys Golf titles yesterday at the Turtle Bay Palmer Course.
The Bears snapped Kaua‘i’s streak of two consecutive state titles.
“Everyone involved with HHSAA and junior golf would like to thank Turtle Bay Resort for their outstanding and generous support throughout the past two weeks by hosting HHSAA Championship. Matt Hall (Director of Golf), Kevin Carll, and Larry Keil went above and beyond to make all of the young golfers feel special throughout the tournaments,” event director Stephen Perry wrote in an e-mail.
Chan shot a 72 in the final round for a two day total of 140. Baldwin (614) came from behind to edge Punahou (615) by one stroke for the team championship. Kaua‘i’s squad carded a 623.
KIF champion Chad Nonaka of Kaua‘i was one shot away from receiving a medal. He shot a final round 79 (39-40) for a two day tally of 154.
Honoka‘a’s Sean Maekawa (142), Moanalua’s Tadd Fujikawa (143), Kealakehe’s Henry Park (147), and Kamehameha-Maui’s Kamalu Kaina (149) rounded out the top five in the state.
Other KIF standouts included Kula’s Cyrus Ogawa (155), Kaua‘i’s Mike Garcia (155), Kaua‘i’s Nikko Tacsiat (156), Kaua‘i’s Kellen Watabu (160), and Kaua‘i’s Wiley Yoshioka (166).
Kapa‘a’s Jet Levinthol withdrew from the tournament after carding a first day total of 88.
Kamehameha-O‘ahu’s Thomas Kua, a Lihu‘e resident, came up with a total of 159.
Kaua‘i has had four individual state champions (David Ishii, 1973; Jonathan Ota, 1979; Jaime Matsumura, 1999; Kellen Watabu, 2005) and four team championships (1979, 1989, 2004, 2005).
