Many of Kauai’s daughters still have the opportunity to spend fun-filled days at Camp Sloggett this summer and for summers into the future. “Even a month after camp my daughters still talk about it every day; camp has changed them,” states one mother, according to a YWCA press release.
The YWCA’s week-long camps at Camp Sloggett in Koke‘e have become an island tradition. The YWCA is seeking participants for this summer’s camps. Girls ages 9 to 15 can attend the camp, while peer leaders — girls age 15 — are being sought, as are camp counselors.
All participants, peer leaders and counselors will spend six days and five nights at the camp where they can participate in activities that are creative and fun, while encouraging physical activity and teamwork.
The YWCA is partnering with the Kokee Museum for a native planting project, hiking and cooking.
Every summer YWCA sponsors the summer camps for girls. This summer there will be two camps, each a week long. The first will take place June 27 through July 2, while the second will be from July 5 to July 10.
The camp is one of the YWCA’s Girlz Zone programs, called Girlz Dayz. In keeping with the YWCA’s larger mission to empower women, these programs encourage the development of strength, courage, confidence, honesty and communication skills. In addition, they assist in developing the girls’natural abilities so they are able to take full advantage of their talents, academic interests, and career pursuits while remaining substance free.
Girls attending can expect to do Tahitian and African drumming, participate in creative arts programs, create musical instruments, and learn acting, yoga and songwriting. Many of the themes in the activities will focus on substance abuse prevention.
At an elevation of 4,500 feet, Camp Sloggett is surrounded by Koke’e State Forest, where miles of maintained hiking trails wind past streams, pools and the Waimea Canyon. Camp Sloggett is a state and federal historic site, which was a gift from the Sloggett Family to the YWCA in 1938. The bunkhouse will house the campers, while the main activity hall provides dining facilities and gathering space. Outside is a covered fire pit, open activity field, volleyball area and covered lanai.
The cost of the camp is $150 and some scholarships are available. The fee includes lodging, meals and snacks, activities, and transportation to and from the camp. The camp has limited space.
