The KIF champion Kapa‘a girls could not find an answer for Word of Life’s Careena Onosai, who poured in 22 points on 9-16 shooting for the 52-49 loss last night in first round action of the division II Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships at McKinley High School.
The Firebrands led 14-13 after the first quarter, but the Warriors fought back to take a 23-18 lead into the halftime locker room.
Kapa‘a held on to a slim advantage after three quarters of play, but Word of Life ran away with the game, with a 21 point fourth quarter, compared to 14 points in the final period for the Warriors.
Poe Gantt paced Kapa‘a with 14 points on 6-13 shooting.
Brittney Carvalho and Mailika Napoleon added eight points apiece in the loss.
Danielle Creamer (5), April Johnson (4), and Michelle Toy (3) rounded out the scoring for the KIF champions, who dropped to 7-3 on the season.
Kapa‘a drops to the consolation bracket and plays Hawai‘i Prep today at 12:45 p.m.
