Hanalei’s Andy Irons demolished Peter Mendia in 3-5 foot perfect conditions to move into the fourth round of the Globe WCT Fiji contest yesterday.
Irons scored a 15.50 with Mendia totaling 10.67 in the All-American battle.
Younger brother Bruce Irons was ousted out of the competition in the third round by Tim Reyes, who put up an 18.06 on the board, compared to Irons’ 15.60.
Fourth round action begins today. The world’s number one surfer, Kelly Slater, withdrew before the start of the contest.
Hanalei’s Roy Powers fell in the second round to Australia’s Trent Munro, 14.50-9.33.
Temperatures at the Cloudbreak Beach are in the mid-20s.
In the meantime, Kaua‘i’s pro women’s surfers, Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly resume competition on August 21-28 in Brazil for the Billabong Girls event.
