LIHU‘E — The Maui Dodgers soared over the Big Island 15-5 to set the stage for the Mustang division title, scheduled for 9 a.m. today at the Lihu‘e County Park.
Maui will take on the Lihu‘e Devil Rays for the tournament title.
The Devil Rays advanced with a 6-1 win over the Lihu‘e Marlins yesterday afternoon.
At noon, Hanapepe will take on the Windward Astros for the title in the Bronco division after upsetting the top-seeded Kekaha squad 17-8 in the semifinals.
The Astros moved on with a 4-2 win over the Lihu‘e Rangers after advancing out of the first round on a coin flip over the Lihu‘e Mariners.
In that game, time expired with the score knotted at one run apiece and the Mariners’ Matt Ebueng standing on third and Isaac Ramboyon in the batter’s box.
Ebueng pitched well for the Mariners, striking out four in the first two innings and keeping the Windward bats quiet.
Branden Velasco broke up the scoreless game in the fourth, driving in Kaui Torres for a 1-0 Windward lead.
Kaimana Wilson answered for the Mariners in the fifth frame, scoring on a pop up bunt by Nicholas Sloggett that fell just short of the Astros’ pitcher.
Windward squandered a scoring opportunity earlier in the game when Velaso attempted to score on a squeeze play with Blaine McCabe at the dish, but was tagged out by Michael Curnan.
The Mariners also missed an opportunity in the first frame when baserunner Brian Haz was doubled up on a fly ball to the outfield.
Scores and results through Sunday afternoon can be found in the Scoreboard on B2.
