HANAMA‘ULU — Choppy, turbulent conditions coupled with a strong offshore wind created challenges for paddlers Saturday. The teams were competing in the 19th annual Kaua‘i Business Canoe Race hosted by the Kaiola Canoe Club.
But when the wind subsided, teams from Turtle Cove Realty, William & Zimmer, Pioneer Hi-Bred and Mark Baird DDS proved they could beat the less-than-ideal conditions.
However, it was hard work.
“This is the last year I’m doing this,” one paddler was overheard telling her family after one of the seeding heats.
For some team members of the Wal-Mart crew, the battle with the ocean came on the heels of overnight shifts. And store manager Janie Whitehead still had tough decisions ahead as she was one of five judges for the 2006 Miss Kaua‘i Filipina pageant Saturday night.
But all of the effort paid off as Wal-Mart, with a best finish of third in three of the four races, was awarded the “Best Motivated” award for their enthusiasm and spirit throughout the day.
Pioneer Hi-Bred was also awarded “Best Dressed Team” honors.
