Police identified the two men who died in a car accident Tuesday on the Kapa‘a Bypass Road as Eli Mitchell, 21, and Justin Brink, 27, both of Kapa‘a.
Both men were in a northbound Acura sedan Mitchell was driving when it apparently crossed the center line and collided with a southbound Honda van, police said.
Mitchell died at the scene and Brink was taken in critical condition to Wilcox Memorial Hospital where he later died.
The van’s female driver was taken to Wilcox and admitted for treatment. A 2-year-old child was also in the van, and was treated and released from Wilcox. Police said the child was in a car seat.
The condition of the woman was not known yesterday.
The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. near the mid-point of the road, about a mile from the Kuhio Highway junction, county spokeswoman Mary Daubert said.
Police are not sure if drugs or alcohol played a factor, and said the investigation is still underway.
The two deaths are the seventh and eighth traffic fatalities on Kaua‘i this year, Daubert said.
